Meet Meghan!

Meghan Sitter, Extension Educator presenting at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Water Symposium.

Meghan Sittler, Extension Educator presenting at the UNL Water Symposium.

I’m excited to introduce you to Meghan Sittler. Meghan joined our team as the domestic water and wastewater management extension educator. This position is new to Lancaster County.

Meghan’s primary focus will be developing and implementing programs related to both water quality and quantity issues surrounding domestic water and wastewater use. She will work with individual homeowners, service providers, small community systems and large municipalities.

Meghan grew up on a farm in southwest Lancaster County where her parents instilled a strong conservation ethic — and her appreciation and concern for natural resources began. She attended University of Nebraska–Lincoln, earning a Bachelor’s dual degree in Environmental Studies and Anthropology, a master’s degree in Natural Resources with minors in political science and environmental planning, and a graduate certification in Public Policy Analysis.

Prior to coming to Extension, Meghan served as coordinator of the Lower Platte River Corridor Alliance from December 2008 to September 2016. Additional work experiences include serving at:

  • National Park Service as an archaeological technician,
  • Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department as an environmental educator,
  • UNL Environmental Studies Program and School of Natural Resources as an advisor and instructor, and
  • National Drought Mitigation Center as a research and outreach specialist.

Meghan is extremely excited about the opportunity to join Extension and focus on critical water resource issues both locally in Lancaster County and across the state.

Welcome to Nebraska Extension in Lancaster County!

Walking to Costa Rica?

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults get at least 2 1/2 hours of moderate aerobic activity per week AND participate in muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days per week.

Lancaster County Extension Staff Fitness Challenge

Lancaster County Extension staff, family and friends celebrated reaching our goal in the office summer fitness challenge by enjoying a Sunday afternoon together.

Lancaster County Extension staff recently participated in a summer walking/running challenge designed to increase physical fitness! Healthy staff make for a more productive office!!

So, we embarked on a mission to “walk” to the sunny beaches of Costa Rica, or in real terms, reach the goal of walking nearly 6.8 million steps over a 6 week period. Well, we did it!!! Staff recorded steps taken, whether by wearable technologies like pedometers, Fitbit*, or using a step conversion chart to translate activities such as yoga, yard work, cleaning, weight lifting, etc. into steps. At the end of the 6 weeks, staff had recorded 6,719,136 steps!

Since we couldn’t actually walk to Costa Rica, we celebrated the tremendous effort by many staff with a Sunday afternoon family beach volleyball event at a local sand volleyball court (not Costa Rica, but close). Prizes were given to top walkers and the brave-at-heart participated in several games of sand volleyball!

Several staff indicated this challenge encouraged them to engage in more fitness activities than usual, which is turn, helped them feel increased energy levels and develop a more positive mindset. Thanks to our amazing wellness committee of Emily, Tyler and Kristen!! They did an awesome job of assisting with charting steps, reminders to keep “walking” and putting together a great ending celebration!
